I go through phases where certain stores are my among my favorites, then something changes. They may have hired a new designer, adjusted their price points, or changed their fit. Suddenly I find I can go for years without buying from a store I once loved. But occasionally something magic will happen - I find myself naturally gravitating back to one of those stores I thought I didn’t like anymore.

There's been a solid three years or so during which I have bought nothing from Banana Republic. They have petite sizes at a mid level price aimed at modern business-casual types, which is right up my alley. Unfortunately, I’ve found their styles to be utterly unappealing the last few years. The fit was baggy, colors not to my taste, and extra trim details meant they’d quickly go out of trend. But finally, they’ve started to turn a corner for me!

I’ve made several purchases from Banana Republic in the last few months, primarily from the blouses section. I’ve had success with sleeveless blouses in drapey material, like polyester. If you are similar to my size, skip the more structured cotton-type tops. Those still run a tad too big and boxy.

The blouse I'm wearing is now one of my favorites! I even bought it in another color (blue and white stripes). The front buttons are a little hard to undo, but I love the subtle detail they bring. It's very easy to style, with simple jeans or pants, or tuck into a pencil skirt for hotter days. It sold out quickly, but there are lots of other great petite options available at Banana Republic.

The general design of their dresses lately also seems nice. The hem lengths are too long for me off the rack, so try them as long as you budget for getting them tailored. I also don’t mind their blazers, however I find J.Crew to be a better jacket fit for me (and ironically, J.Crew blouses are too big!).

Buy from Banana Republic at full price if you see something you absolutely love. Otherwise, check in on weekends as there are frequent sales. I recently picked something up for less than ten dollars! Their sales are a great time to perk up your wardrobe, for prices less than fast fashion brands at times.
